Many of you have asked me about unemployment benefits and the recent changes due to the COVID-19 outbreak. There are several changes with most at the state level, since it is each state’s Department of Labor that controls unemployment benefits.
In addition to your state’s regular unemployment benefits, the federal government mandated that, for claims on or after March 14, 2020, the maximum duration for benefits shall be 39 weeks. Then with the CARES Act, the feds added $600 weekly, for four months, for people who lost their jobs beginning March 27, 2020 and ending July 31, 2020.
Many states also offer partial unemployment benefits. This is when people have a reduction of work hours or is temporarily laid off due to the virus but will most likely be rehired after the pandemic ends.
The federal $600 is added to your state unemployment benefits for both full and partial claims but check with your states unemployment agency for any restrictions or reduction of benefits due to partial unemployment claims.
